The History of the Photograph

“Planet Earth” – a recognized masterpiece in photographic art

The panoramic photograph was taken in the mid-90s in the mountains of South China, not too far from a town called Yangzhou in the Guangxi province. In 2008 the author presented this piece in one of the most prestigious contests of mountain photography Maria Luisa Memorial in Spain.

Two of the author’s works immediately began to compete for the prize name “Planet Earth.” “Blue and Pink” was the initial name of the photograph as it was entered in the contest, along with “The Volcanoes of Kamchatka” which was taken by the master in the same year but in a different part of the world. The two masterpieces were so amazing, that there was a misperception among the judges. At first, they declared that the winning photograph was “The Volcanoes of Kamchatka,” but then their minds changed. In the end, “The Volcanoes of Kamchatka” was the nominated finalist and the photograph “Blue and Pink” received the prize name “Planet Earth” after which it became the official name of the art piece.

After the announcing the contest winner, a respectable newspaper called New Spain published a front page with a portrait of the American adventurer with Waterfalls Victoria in South Africa as the background with a headline saying: “The most famous adventurer opens Asturias. Sergey Melnikoff flies across the ocean for one photograph...”

“Planet Earth” is a panoramic photograph of highland mountains in Southern China – a spectacular part of our world. On the foreground, still enclosed in darkness from the night, rocky pillars covered in the bamboo thickets surge to the skies. In the middle-ground – an incredible amount of visual plans are disregarded by the eye which urges into the distant horizon. Across the picture is a lilac haze in which finger-capped mountains, wrapped in snug blue clouds, sink into the jungles over which inflames the scarlet dawn of a new day. In front of us are the piercing colors of Asia, the great and beautiful land of China.
